Clogs Are Cool

15 04 2010

When someone mentions ‘clogs’, you may think of the traditional Dutch shoe, and clog dancing. You may have your reservations and think that these shoes could never possibly be fashionable, but once again Alexa Chung makes the unfashionable look highly stylish. Not only did this picture convince me that clogs can look cool, it made me want a pair myself. Clogs are a big trend this spring, and the high street has many to choose from.

Here are some of my favourite clogs from the high-street:

Low Heels Are Back

13 04 2010

An unusual trend this season,  kitten heels (low heels) are set to be shoe of the summer. It may be a sigh of relief for those who have long endured sky-high stillettos and painful platforms. Others may be unsure and not find low heels very attractive, but I’m pretty sure once you see some of the latest designer low heels you will be very impressed.

Here is a pick of some of the kitten heels available on the high street:

Fresh Floral Print

12 04 2010

Each year when the sun comes out and flowers begin to bloom, florals come in style! Floral is a fabulously feminine and colourful print, brightening your wardrobe after the darker shades of winter. Lucky for us the flower power is everywhere – every type of clothing and accessory imaginable you can get in a funky floral style!

Floral print dresses are really pretty, wear with leggings now in spring time and with a tan later in the summer! A floral skirt worn with a plain t-shirt or vest top is also a great way to wear the trend. Why not also try a cute floral top with jeans for a more casual style. Or maybe you’re looking to add a little something to a plain outfit? A pretty floral accessory such as a headband or bag will do the trick. Just remember, it’s not a good idea wear more than one floral print piece per outfit, especially with clashing prints, or prepare for a flower overload!

If you’re petite, avoid wearing overly large florals as this can swamp you out, try wearing smaller prints in shapes best for your figure.
If you’re average/tall in height and are slim, it’s easy for you to pull of most floral prints – go for it!
If you’re a curvy, avoid large prints, as these can draw attention to the places you’d like to hide. Go for smaller prints.

Shorts are a firm favourite each year for summer and this year is no exception! Prepare to get your legs out girls because there is a massive choice on the high street to pick from.

Wearing denim or safari style with a t-shirt is perfect for the daytime. Tailored, silk shorts work best for night-time and leather shorts are also bang on trend.

Military Trend For Spring

10 04 2010

Tailored jackets, cargo pants and a colour palette of greens, navy and khaki – the military look is huge this season and is all over the catwalks.

Balmain Spring/Summer 2010

Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2010

It’s easy to incorporate the military look into your wardrobe. Try wearing a tailored jacket with harem pants or wet-look leggings to instantly look military chic. Cargo pants are also a great option, wear these with a plain vest top for casual look. Fitted military dresses are also a fab night-time outfit, wear with heels and you’re good to go.

When picking military clothes, the best details to look for are brass buttons, zipper detailing, pockets and cuff sleeves.

Here are some of my favourite military pieces:

Military Dress by Rare – Topshop

Military Cardigan – Rare

Khaki Combat Skinny Trouser – Miss Selfridge

Trophy Jacket – Warehouse

Studded Peeptoe Boot – New Look

Double Denim

9 04 2010

Double denim is the latest controversial trend to hit catwalks this season, a flashback to the 90’s trend. Love it or loathe it, it’s set to be big. You may quiver in fear or embrace it, but it is by no means an easy look to pull off! There is a fine line between looking highly fashionable and looking like a truck driver.

Here take for example, Alexa Chung, looking fabulous as always. Her washed out shirt and skinny jeans look great!

Now cast your eyes on this picture, my friends, is when denim begins to go horribly wrong.  My eyes hurt from all the denim!

Tips for wearing double denim:
Don’t wear two pieces of the same shade – it makes the outfit clash. Contrast is the key to making it work, try wearing very dark jeans with a lighter shirt (like the picture of Alexa Chung, above).
Accessorizing is a good way to break the outfit up. Try wearing colourful flats, a nice handbag or some jewellery.
Never go for more than two pieces of denim per outfit, ‘triple denim’ is going overboard.
Do not wear with cowboy boots or a cowboy hat, unless you really want the Wild West look. Flats are definitely the best option.

Here are some of my favourite denim pieces (just don’t wear them altogether!):

Bleach Denim Oversized Shirt – Topshop

Dark Rinse Super Skinny Jeans – Dorothy Perkins

Raw Edge Denim Mini Skirt – New Look

High Waisted Hotpants – Topshop

Colour Block Denim Dress – Whistles (ASOS)
